The Show Goes On: Earthquake Damage Forces Arlington Chorus to Relocate September 24 Performance to Washington-Lee High School Venue still needed for Holiday-season charity concert Arlington, Virginia (September 19, 2011). Reacting rapidly to last week’s announcement of the temporary closure of its usual performance venue due to earthquake-related damage, the Potomac Harmony Chorus announces the successful relocation of its 35th Anniversary Show, Melodies, Memories and Magic. The 80-member all-woman group will instead perform at the Washington-Lee High School Auditorium at 1301 N. Stafford Street, Arlington, at the originally scheduled date and time: 3pm on Saturday, September 24. “The earthquake we had a few weeks ago damaged the Thomas Jefferson Theater, where we were scheduled to perform,” said Show Co-Chair Linda Schwartz of Alexandria. “Arlington County has declared the theater unsafe for current use. The show must go on, however, and it will - less than two miles away at the Washington-Lee High School theater.” “We are thrilled that Washington-Lee so graciously accommodated our last-minute request to use their theater,” added Schwartz. “It is a beautiful venue that our audience and performers will love.” Washington-Lee High School is very close to both I-66 and the Ballston Metro Station. There is an adjacent parking garage available as well as on-street parking. Theater access is through a side door of the building, directly across from the parking garage, not through the main school entrance. The show itself--an original musical comedy created by chorus members--revolves around a high school reporter who is treated to a romp through 35 years of musical memories. Earthquake-related repairs have also prompted the chorus to seek an alternate venue for its traditional and much-loved Holiday Concert, a free annual performance for the community that in the past two years has raised over $2000 in donations to help Arlington-based Doorways work with victims of domestic violence and homelessness. “We are now actively seeking an alternate low-cost location that can accommodate this wonderful community gathering that benefits a great cause,” commented Mary Gleason, the chorus’ Facilities Chair. Tickets for the September 24 show and information about the award-winning Potomac Harmony Chorus, including how women ages 13 and up can visit and sing with the a cappella group, are available at www.PotomacHarmony.org.
